Preparation for the Royal Conservatory of Music Theory Examinations

Our Theory courses follow the Syllabus of the Royal Conservatory of Music.

RCM theory is the theoretical component of the RCM system. It is a written exam, separate from the practical, played exam. Starting at Grade 5, the RCM has a theory co-requisite involved in the grade. Each theory grade must be completed along with the practical exam for the certificate to be issued.

Why take theory exams?

Although students receive their practical mark and examiners comments, they will not receive the certificate unless the theory co-requisite is completed.

• Students who are in Royal Conservatory Grade 3 and up should consider taking the Theory classes since, before receiving the Grade 5 certificate, they are required to complete the Theory examination, Level 5.
• There are four levels of examination in Theory to be completed by the time the students get to grade 8 piano. They are not optional. The students do not get their certificates from grade 5 onwards without having completed the corresponding theory level.
• We teach all four levels of Theory consecutively. 
• This GROUP class will be offered on Wednesday at 5:30pm (one hour lessons).
• Should you/your child be interested in registering for the course, please let us know as soon as possible since this class will fill up quickly.
• Please note that group monthly fees of $130 will apply for this course.
